Walkway to Broadway and Beyond
Most days when I go on my walks through the Lloyd District, I pass the spot in the picture. It’s not a park, more of a concrete and brick walkway, with pots and planters. Trees and plants abound and one lonely piece of art I’ve already written about and call the “Red Tree Aliens.”
People who leave the Lloyd Center by what I consider the main entrance (because it is the main entrance for me!) can cross Halsey (they should watch for cars), and voila! They are on the walkway.
If they want, pedestrians can continue across Weidler (they should wait for the walk signal) and even cross Broadway and enter the Irvington District (which looks very nice and residential).
The street in the background is Twelfth (12th) Street in the Irvington District.
This picture was taken just short of the Lloyd Center entrance, beneath the non-functioning skybridge and above the non-functional escalator, which brings up other subjects: Why is the escalator non-functional? It’s not like they are trying to fix it. If the Lloyd Center doesn’t want it anymore, rip it out. Don’t rip out the skybridge (I don’t know why), but I’m curious why it doesn’t work.
I have theories, but inquiring minds want to know for certain.
Another subject, another day.
In the picture, the Dollar Tree is on the left and the bamboo store (what is that store called?) (oh, yes) – Pier 1 on the other side. The way I cropped the photo – both of those stores are out of the shot.
Further up, Safeway is on the left and Newport Seafood Grill is on the right. From the photo, you can’t really tell that, either. What you can tell (I hope) is that it is just a nice place to walk, talk, sit down, eat your lunch, drink a soda, or just rest and relax.
Across Broadway is a sub shop (it used to be Quizno’s) and I’ve been dying to try it, but haven’t yet. I think it is called, “Jimmy’s.” Their literature says they have “Freaky Fast Delivery.”
Across Broadway, the Irvington District is mostly a residential neighborhood. There are lots of houses, some of them big houses. Some not. The Lloyd District is mostly businesses, Lloyd Center Mall, shops that sell things to consumers, restaurants, hotels, state offices, Convention Center, Rose quarter, and a few very righteous apartment buildings.
But I was just tired.
I sat in the area in the picture and guzzled a Dr. Pepper I bought at Safeway.
