Goodwill on Broadway in Portland
I am not sure exactly what Goodwill does to help the needy, but their website says they help get jobs and educate the poor. Perhaps I should contact them. One thing I do know is that they have stores that sell previously-owned goods.
The Goodwill Store is on Broadway, right where 12th Street intersects it from the Irvington District. Nearby (on Broadway) is Subway. The Goodwill is across Broadway from Bank of America and Rose’s (I think Weight Watchers is in that building, too).
Is that side of Broadway in the Lloyd District? I don’t know. I do know I’ve been to Goodwill.
How long do you think this building has been a Goodwill? Ten years? A sign in the parking lot says it is “not” a parking lot for Barnes & Noble. I looked left. I looked right. I looked behind me. There certainly was not a Barnes & Noble ahead of me, since I was looking at the parking lot.
The rear of the building, by the way, is where you turn in donations. The day I was there, a lady with a pick-up truck was turning in lots of stuff, including an ancient framed picture of Bob Marley.
For a moment, I thought about asking to buy the picture of Bob Marley.
Anyway, don’t park in that lot. Park on the street or across the way – but not in the totally and completely empty lot behind Goodwill. At least it was totally empty the day I was there.
Come to think of it, that was a Sunday.
Maybe that’s why there were no panhandlers that day, either. They were taking a day off. Normally, there is at least one sitting at the entrance on Broadway. Often, they are smoking or have a friend with them.
The front part of the store is totally devoted to clothes – ladies, children, active-wear, men. Shirts, ties, shorts, belts, and some things that aren’t belts but are in the same section as belts. Back supports for guys and gals that lift weights. Where else are you going to put them, though? With the belts.
In the back is some really neat..I don’t know what you should call it. You could get lost, there is so much neat stuff. There are lots of VHS video-tape player and DVD players. The world is adopting Blu-ray, but not everyone has it yet. There are square televisions. If you’re not in the market for old technology, there are lots of things – so many that if you bought everything you thought was interesting – your spouse would make your take things to…
…Goodwill.
There are tall lamps, short lamps, desk lamps, dishes, cutting boards, candle holders, furniture, and more.
Lots of stuff.
Visit. Buy stuff. At least look. You will see something cool. I promise.
