A Rainy Winter Day in Portland

Rainy Winter Day in Portland

In spring and summer there are beautiful bright ‘sun-shine-ey’ days when grass is emerald green, bushes and trees are lush and bountiful and flowers are all the colors of the rainbow.  However, right now is the middle of winter and yesterday a constant drizzle drenched our city.

So what did I do?

Wearing a raincoat, I went for a walk in the Lloyd District, down Broadway to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.  I think that is the corner of the At&T store.  I turned there and as I was walking down MLK, I saw Wendy’s.  Because I scared myself with a glance in a window the other day, I put myself on a diet and have a current craving for potatoes, especially fried potatoes with onions.  I thought about Wendy’s french fries.  However, I was able to resist the urge, partly because I liked Wendy’s old version of french fries, not their current version.  Safeway’s Jo-jo’s, though?  That’s a bigger temptation.

After walking down MLK, I turned on Halsey and headed toward the Lloyd Center.  The electric monstrosity was humming away.  I wonder if it does that all the time?  I stopped at Barnes & Noble to pick up a book for my wife, then trekked home.

My raincoat is not water resistant or anything, it is water proof — rubberized with zippers and snaps and cool pockets and a hood with a string.  If I’m going to get wet – it’s an area not covered by the raincoat.

When I got home, my shirt was wet.  No water could have gotten in, so I must have perspired.  I didn’t think I was dressed all that warmly, wearing only a heavy shirt and t-shirt beneath the raincoat.

It was winter!

Maybe rain leaked through the seams and what I mistakenly thought was sweat was really rainwater?  I need to find out.  Is it raining today?
