1620 Broadway
Truthfully, I don’t know what this apartment building is called. Someone said it was “1620 Broadway,” so that’s how I think of it. It is between Broadway and Weidler on one side and 16th and 17th on the other. 1620 Broadway lies just outside the Lloyd District, near the border.
The entire block is fairly new and if every block was like this one, I would probably dislike it – because they would all be ‘the same.’ Because this is different than most of the neighborhood, I like it. What makes Portland unique is that the city is a hodge-podge of different styles – some old, some new. The Lloyd District is especially like that because almost all the old houses got torn down to make way for…
…what’s there.
This building looks like a nice place to live. There are four residential floors, plus the top floor. Inside is a courtyard, below is a parking garage. I’ve actually been in the parking garage because I had business at the U.S. Bank on the first floor.
On the first floor is the bank, a Prudential Northwest office, and Broadway Floral. The building for Broadway Floral is separate from the rest and probably built by a different developer, but they used the same bricks and it fits really well. It is only one story tall. However, if the florist’s building wasn’t there, the block might be really boring.
There is a large section that is vacant, but will someday be filled.
On Sunday, during the summer, there is/was a Farmer’s Market on 16th, next to the building. The windows get washed (on the outside) every six months or so. What the windows are like on the inside depends on the owner. There are lots of balconies. I haven’t seen anyone standing or sitting on them, but you could.
I would.
